Steampunk is a subgenre of fantasy and speculative fiction that came into prominence in the 1980s and early 1990s. The term denotes works set in an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century, and often set in Victorian era England—but with prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.

This week we'll focus on some of the exciting fashion coming out of America, with four classically trained designers who choose to work in latex.

Vex Clothing has been on the scene for several years by now, and has made quite a name with their custom designs worn by everyone like KumiMonster, RubberDoll, Emily Marilyn, Masumi Max and our own 3XL. The lines are a creative mix of fetish and fashion, using uncommon to fetish color combinations and techniques. They've recently moved into larger quarters. Lots of great things are coming Renee Masoomian's way since we last visited her. Renee was recently nominated for best newcomer at the 2008 European Fetish Awards, and she'll be presenting a selection of her designs at Torture Garden's Skin Two Night in September.

There are two ranges--Baby Love's Latex, a vintage-inspired pin-up line, and Soliloquy, her higher end range of custom made pieces. The custom made line really impressed me! Here Jade Vixen is wearing a transparent pink latex suit with ruffles.

You may remember Maggie Delena Designs from an earlier post. Recently I checked out their eBay store, where there were several lovely womens pieces. It also looks like a menswear line is to be launched in the very near future!

So, there you have it: 4 great labels destined to dispel that tired old notion that nothing exciting comes out of America anymore.

Brighton photographer and filmmaker Mark Bennet of Alchemical Shadows has posted an exciting video he filmed of HW Design's catwalk show at Torture Garden's 2008 birthday blowout.

The video which features a stunning array of printed transparent leopard print corsets, coats, capes, catsuits, hoods and more on an all-star fetish model cast may help console those of us who were not lucky enough to be at the actual event.

There's been an influx of very talented designers entering the latex market these days. We really appreciate the new life they're bringing to our old fetish gear, and we'll highlight some of the newest and most promising ones as we learn of them.

Today we'll introduce you to three relative newcomers: Trés Bonjour Luxury Couture Latex from Berlin, HMS Latex of Paris, and Lickorish Latex from the UK.

Trés Bonjour Couture Latex is the young designer Viola Jaeger of Berlin's ultra feminine new line. Her black and white creations are reminiscent of Absolute Danny's sophisticated separates and Atsuko Kudo's feminine classics. The site is one of the prettiest latex clothing sites I've encountered, with its lovely lace details and pink ribbon touches. It's also highly functional, which is not always the case with latex clothes sites!

Standouts for me included her feminine bodies and pencil skirt variations. I also appreciate the use of elegant non-fetish shoes to showcase her timeless styles, and the obvious care that's gone into creating durable and well made fashion.

It seems like the handcraft site, Etsy.com has become a preferred venue for start-up latex designers now that eBay has upped their selling costs and implemented rather puritanical listing policies. I like Etsy, it just looks more polished and it feels much more like the nice shopping experience we all like to have online.

There are 2 designers on Etsy to check out, especially for their clever accessories and fair prices, for those times when you don't have an unlimited budget or room on the Visa card. The first, Lickorish Latex, is a line designed by a nice English couple up north in Huddersfield, which focuses primarily on exquisite accessories.

Often old latex separates just need a couple of standout accessories to give new life to old favorites. Why not add some bow hair clips and a pair of corset suspenders/braces? At these prices, you'll have money left over for a couple of long stemmed roses for your sweetheart! What has also impressed me about Lickorish Latex is their classy packaging and very attentive customer service. (Note to retail boutiques: they do wholesale!)

HMS Latex, also on Etsy was founded in 2006 by Sophie, a young model and makeup artist living in Paris. In just two short years, she's really come into her own as a talented latex designer.

I especially like her latex Delicacy Mittens, which have an enormous amount of detail for such a miniscule price ($35!). Her menswear featured in her Etsy store also looks very well made, and keep an eye out for new additions to her line, such as high fashion boleros and stunning dresses which I've sneak previewed at her Live Journal.

Xozt Fetish Latex (LINK REMOVED DUE VIRUS ON SITE!) is a personal webpage created by a rubber loving couple from Russia, where you'll find lots of free photos of their fabulous latex life. The site is smartly designed with simple navigation menus that guides the user through their galleries as well as a catalogue of third-party fetish videos. The photos clearly portray the enthusiasm these two have for their favorite fetish material and the joy they get from sharing it with the world. I for one think it's really cool to see sites like this popping up, personal pages from people in far flung lands, who enjoy nothing more than to share their love of latex with us. UK film maker and rubberist, Andre is seeking latex wearing bad guys for a secret agent film. The film will be a cross between James Bond and Pamela Anderson's VIP, with a lot of latex added. Already on board to play the sadistic boss of the evil organization is Anastasia Pierce.

Andre plans on playing a bad guy himself along with two other guys, but they are in dire need of an additional 7-8 extra bad guys. The bad guys will keep getting killed, shot or blown up by Sheila Almeida (the good female agent), so when the film is completed it will look like thousand different bad guys get their ass kicked!

You won't need to say anything or have any previous acting experience, all you need is your own black latex catsuit and a black hood and be in or near Los Angeles, from Friday March 7th to Sunday March 9th. Actors would ideally be around five feet, nine inches tall, but it's not essential.

German designer, Maria Sander is one of the newest on the scene. The talented designer's use of loose rubber folds and pleats, combined with form hugging, skin tight pieces make for some spectacular looking outfits. With vintage hats, bags, belts and other accessories, Maria Sander provides a large catalogue of oh so chic ladies latex that would be as much at home at a fetish ball as a night out on the town.

One of the oldest latex garment design houses in the world, the venerable DeMask, has an exciting, new development in store for fetish fashion victims of all genders. They are finally offering made to measure and custom service! With many exciting, new designs having been introduced at DeMask recently, it would stand to reason that they would finally start selling their pieces precisely tailored to the customer's needs. I don't know anyone who has bought anything custom from them, and I'm curious to hear from people who have.

...and in another example of the fetish aesthetic seeping it's way into mainstream fashion, Italian fashion trendsetter, Marni is now offering four different rubber bags, as well as rubber jacket for fashionistas with a taste for the shiny stuff. While it's great to see latex and latex-like looks so ubiquitous this fall, the mainstream does have a way of jacking up the price don't they?

This video compilation, produced by Anastasia Pierce, from this year's Fetish Con in Tampa, gives you a little slice of the sexiness that you might have slept on. Love Larceny Latex... That's the tagline for the new film, "Walk All Over Me," premiering in Canada this weekend and hopefully the rest of the world very soon.

Directed by Canadian filmmaker, Robert Cuffley and starring Leelee Sobieski of "Eyes Wide Shut" fame and "Battlestar Galactica" babe, Trisha Helfer, "Walk All Over Me" is the story of a small town ingenue (Sobieski) looking to escape her doldrums by moving to the big city and assuming the identity of a well paid dominitrix (Helfer). Along the way mistaken identity leads to all sorts of sordid and darkly humorous hijinks as the girl comes to find her confidence and realize the power of her sexuality. Looks like fun, and how can you not love the sight of those two in latex? Check out the trailer for more.

In a unique feat of latex design and garment construction, Jane Doe created a rubber masterwork in the Japanese wedding party that she outfitted recently. This new take on traditional Japanese formalwear was custom tailored and emblazoned with Kanji applique (Horse?) for a real wedding. Not much more info available, so if you know more do tell!
