The sexy latex costume worn by actress Malin Akerman, who portrays Silk Spectre II in the just released “Watchmen” movie, is produced by Syren Couture.
I talked to Jeffrey Gent (designer) and Ann-Marie Holman (press liaison) from Syren Couture about the Silk Spectre II costume:
First let me congrats you on a great job with the Silk Specter II costume. It really looks amazing!
Thank you so very much; we’re really pleased with how it turned out.
How did Syren get involved in the Watchmen movie?
Michael Wilkinson – best known for his epic costumes in 300 – came to us with his amazing sketches and asked if we could bring them to life.
Were you working directly with Watchmen’s costume designer Michael Wilkinson?
Yes, we had many meetings, phone calls, and fittings. Malin Ackerman – the actress playing Silk Spectre II – was so sweet and patient with all the fittings.
How big a role did Syren play in the design process?
Our role was more truly with the implementation, and not the initial design process, which was Wilkinson’s inspiration. We did take a very active and at times, very innovative role with making his vision a reality, though. For example, we developed some new techniques to work with combining latex and metal – as you know, the two materials are normally incompatible – metal has an almost corrosive effect on latex.
Tell us how Laurie Juspeczyk’s costume is put together. Is she wearing a corset?
Let’s just say there is boning and lacing, but not a traditional corset.
The yellow latex you used for the costume doesn’t look like a standard latex color, is that specially made?
It is indeed a custom color – we sent a Pantone color swatch to our latex sheeting manufacturer and they matched it for us.
The filming must be hard on a latex costume. How many copies of the costume did Syren create?
Four for Malin Ackerman and four for her stunt double.
Did Syren make other things for the Watchmen movie besides the Silk Specter II costume?
No, the Silk Spectre II latex costume was the only thing Syren made for the film.
Any other future movie projects that you can tell us about?
We have a number of fabulous projects in the work, but we are contractually obligated to not talk about them or even name them till they hit theaters.
Thank you so much for taking time for doing this interview with us!
Thank you for thinking of Syren – it’s a pleasure to speak with you.
We’ll be looking forward to see your creations on the big screen when Watchmen premieres around the globe this month.
Fantastic interview!
